Occupy Vacancy
André Fuqua is the Co-Founder and Design Engineer of Occupy Vacancy, a public art initiative working to highlight the cultural heritage and architectural history of St. Louis's Northside. Occupy Vacancy redevelops vacant city lots in St. Louis as spaces for public art that is inspired by architectural remnants of abandoned structures in the city. The City of St. Louis, Missouri is home to nearly 25,000 vacant lots and buildings. Racialized housing policy and disinvestment have left majority-Black areas with over 90% of all vacant parcels citywide. These areas are concentrated primarily on the city’s Northside.
Occupy Vacancy acknowledges the collective loss of St. Louis’s neighborhoods and recognizes the many prominent Black St. Louisans that have shaped the landscape of the city. The initiative is a call to action to honor the cultural and architectural heritage of St. Louis which disappears when city homes and businesses are torn down, and works to reimagine vacant spaces in the cityscape as sites for community development.
